Soapbox Derby - Father's Day

Sunday, June 19, 2011

After a successful test run on St. Vital Avenue, the Soapbox Derby is set to go this Father’s Day, June 19, 2011 at 1 PM. As part of the activities celebrating St. Albert’s 150th anniversary, the Soapbox Derby is sure to be a highlight for the city’s budding race car drivers.

“We are really excited to present this event for the youth of St. Albert,” says Abi Iskander, Youth Subcommittee Chair. “It has been great fun to think of all the kids who will be working with their parents to get their soapbox car ready for race day.”

To be eligible to participate, entrants must be between the ages of 6 — 12, have submitted their registration form and paid the entry fees. The entry fee is $110, which includes $30 for registration and $80 for the soapbox kit. Participants will also receive a t-shirt and a participation package.

But with only 96 soapbox kits, the event is sure to fill up fast. “If you want to participate, register as soon as possible!” exclaims Abi.

The kits include all the hardware necessary to build the car, but participants must provide their own plywood — a half sheet of 5/8” plywood along with a steering wheel and brakes.

In addition, participants must have their car inspected before the race and wear a properly fitting helmet. “This is a fun event but our first priority is making sure the kids are safe,” remarks Abi. Inspections are scheduled to take place on June 15 and 16.

Participants are encouraged to decorate their soapbox car, as there will be prizes for best decoration as well as best cheer section.
